2026 WASSCE – No directive to limit subjects for WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted circulating claims that it has issued a directive to restrict senior secondary school students to specific subjects for school candidates for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

A statement issued on Tuesday by Moyosola Adesina, the acting Head of Public Affairs on behalf of the WAEC National Office Head, described the reports as “baseless speculations” and urged schools and the public to disregard them.

Reacting to recent social media rumors that schools were directed to reduce the subject combination of students for the 2026 examination, WAEC reaffirmed that the claims were false and did not emanate from the council.

The examining body clarified that it does not have the authority to issue directions on the formulation or modification of the senior secondary school curriculum, noting that such responsibility rests solely with the federal government through the appropriate educational agencies.

“WAEC clearly wishes to distance itself from this unfounded perception and information circulating on the said subject. The Council has not issued any such directive nor restricted the choice of students to offer any particular subject for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the statement said.

The Council stressed that its responsibilities are limited to the conduct of examinations based on a government-approved curriculum, conducted strictly within the legal and administrative framework established by the Nigerian Government.

“The development and regulation of curriculum in Nigeria is within the purview of the Federal Government. WAEC, as an examination body, comes to implement government policies only through assessment.

It said, “Schools, stakeholders and the general public are advised not to pay attention to misleading reports and rely only on the official communications of the Council for accurate information regarding the WASSCE (SC) 2026 examination guidelines.”

The Council also assured all stakeholders that any amendments in the curriculum will be done through proper channels and will never be introduced arbitrarily.
