Popular NAS-Maker Synology confirmed the policy appearing on its German website earlier this week and made a little clear: the devices starting with the 2025 series will require a synology-branded hard drive for their “plus” tier to complete compatibility, at least before.
“Sinology-branded drives would be required for use in a newly declared plus series, with a representative of a synology by email, with a plan to update the product compatibility list, the additional drive can be fully vetted into the synology system.” “Comprehensive internal tests have shown that a rigid verification process that follows a rigid verification process occurs at the low risk of the ongoing compatibility issues when the synology system is linked to the synology system.”
Syntology's German press release states that without a synology-branded or approved drive in a device, NAS devices may fail to create storage pools and lose volume-wide deeduplication and lifestyle analysis. Similar drive restrictions are already for XS Plus and Rack-Mounted Sinology models, although work-ass-passes exist.
Synology also says that it will later add “carefully curated drive compatibility framework” to the third-party drive and user can submit the drive for testing and documentation. “Drives that meet the stringent standards of synology can be validated for use by offering flexibility while maintaining the integrity of the system.”
