According to the Commissioner for Information, Annikan Umanah, following the re-appearance of potholes on roads within Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, following much public outcry, both commuters and residents expressed grave concern, the failed stretches are to be repaired.
Akwa Ibom is known for its good network of roads across the state and the state capital Uyo, one of the cleanest cities in the country, was fast losing attractiveness as roads in the city center and outskirts were becoming potholed.
A notable location is under the flyover along Atiku Abubakar Way, which has deteriorated to such an extent that motorists get stuck in this area, as well as several other areas including around Ibom Plaza in the city center where there are failed locations.
In Itam Central Park, which is off Itam Junction, two huge potholes have formed on major roads, making it impossible for motorists to have a smooth ride.

It was learned that the attention of the state government was drawn to this ugly situation following persistent media reports and photographs of potholes recently shared online.
Reacting to the photos, the state government in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Annikan Umana, said a detailed assessment of potholes and failed stretches of roads within the Uyo metropolis would be conducted by the Ministry of Works for immediate intervention.
“The state government is aware of the potholes that have emerged on some roads as a result of heavy and prolonged rainfall in recent weeks.”
“The government wishes to assure the public that as soon as the rains subside, rehabilitation work will begin in earnest to ensure proper and sustainable reconstruction of the affected parts.
“The government appeals to residents and motorists to exercise patience and understanding as the Ministry of Works finalizes its arrangements to respond quickly and responsibly to infrastructure needs across the state,” the statement said.
