Firm promotes literacy in Lagos public schools to deepen education investment

A Nigerian indigenous energy company is deepening its social investment in the country's education sector by promoting literacy among school pupils in Lagos State.

The program tagged Selai School Initiative is the company’s flagship back-to-school program designed to support low-income pupils as schools across Lagos State in the 2025/2026 academic session.

Omolola Amadi, head of the Selai Community Programme, said the company's intervention goes beyond material support, describing it as an investment in the confidence and potential of young learners.

“We believe that kids need more than just tuition to thrive in the classroom; they need the tools, confidence and encouragement to excel,” he said.

Amadi said Selai Gas Limited launched the initiative as a demonstration of corporate responsibility and community impact.

According to him, the Selai School initiative is part of Selai Gas's broader mission to promote education and social development in underprivileged communities.

“The Selai Schools initiative is about investing in young minds, ensuring every child is better prepared and more confident,” Amadi said.

The energy company distributed essential learning materials to about 300 pupils from primary and secondary schools in the Agege area of Lagos.

The company also announced that the initiative will now be an annual event, with plans already underway to expand its reach to more schools and communities in Lagos State in future editions.

Head of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Ifako-Ijaiye, Agege, Florence Adegbui, said the intervention is timely and impactful, considering the current economic challenges faced by many families.

He said, “This is a timely intervention, as many parents struggle to provide all the necessary educational materials for their children. By coming forward, Selai Gas has not only reduced that burden, but has also sent a message to these children that their education matters.”
