Ombudsman Jesus Crispin C. Remulla is in good health and fully capable of performing his duties, his office said Monday, clarifying that recent comments about his medical condition have been taken out of context.
“The Lokpal is in good health and is discharging his responsibilities with full energy and dedication,” his office said in a statement. “He's been cancer-free for a year and a half.”
The clarification followed his televised interview with journalist Luchi Cruz-Valdez on October 24, where Mr Remulla revealed he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2023 – around the same time he had quintuple heart bypass surgery.
Mr Remulla said he had to undergo two cycles of chemotherapy, total body radiation and a bone marrow transplant before making a full recovery.
“The Ombudsman's statement on his health cites his past experience,” the office said. “He was speaking about what he had gone through before becoming the Lokpal.”
Mr Remulla, who went on medical leave from the Justice Department in 2023 due to personal reasons, was appointed as the Ombudsman this year.
The Office of the Ombudsman also said that it is fully committed to carrying out its order. “We assure the public that the Ombudsman is committed to holding those responsible for the flood control issue accountable,” the statement said. “Their second chance at life has given them a strong sense of purpose – they have nothing else to fear or delay.” – Erica Mae P.
