Smart said the partnership will enable mobile communications in areas with no signal by connecting ordinary mobile phones directly to satellites. Smart said the initiative will prioritize coastal and mountainous areas and key sea routes, ensuring safe, reliable and stable connections.
Once the Link satellite direct-to-device network is fully operational in the next few years, Smart said it expects to offer full mobile voice and data connectivity.
The initial rollout will include basic text messaging and mobile applications over LTE (Long Term Evolution), designed to help maintain communications during typhoons, earthquakes and other emergencies.
