Tinubu tells Trump: Nigeria stands strong as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantee of religious freedom

President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria will stand firm as a democracy governed by a constitution that guarantees religious freedom.

The President, writing on his X handle, said his administration is open to both Christians and Muslims, in an apparent reference to President Donald Trump declaring Nigeria a “Country of Special Concern”.

The President said his administration is addressing the issues of insecurity affecting citizens of different religions and faiths.

“Since 2023, our administration has maintained open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike and continues to address security challenges that affect citizens of different faiths and regions,” Tinubu said on X.

He condemned the portrayal of Nigeria as “religiously intolerant” and said such claims “do not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into account the government's consistent and sincere efforts to protect freedom of religion and belief for all Nigerians.”

“Religious freedom and tolerance have been and will always remain the core tenets of our collective identity.

“Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.

“Nigeria is a country where the security of its citizens of all religions is constitutionally guaranteed.

“Our Administration is committed to working with the United States Government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on the safety of communities of all faiths.”
