Genoa sacks Vieira after winless Serie A season

Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira has been sacked by Genoa after a disappointing start to the Serie A campaign, which has left the club bottom of the table.

The former Arsenal and France midfielder's final match in charge came on Wednesday evening, when Genoa suffered a 2-0 home defeat to newly promoted Cremonese. Federico Bonazzoli, playing alongside Jamie Vardy, scored both goals for the visitors.

The defeat extended Genoa's winless run of nine matches from the start of the season, with the club recording only three draws and six defeats, scoring only four goals, the joint-worst performance in the division.

A club statement read, “Genoa CFC has announced that Patrick Vieira is no longer the coach of the first team. The club would like to thank the coach and his staff for the dedication and professionalism they have shown during their work and wish them all the best in their future careers.”

“The technical leadership of the first team has been assigned on an interim basis to Mr. Roberto Murguita, who will be assisted by Mr. Domenico Criscito.”

Vieira, who signed a contract extension in the summer, joined former club Inter Milan before the season started. Inter eventually appointed Christian Chivu as Simone Inzaghi's replacement after Inzaghi left for Al-Hilal.

Vieira leaves Genoa without a single win this season, as the club launches another managerial search in hopes of reviving their Serie A campaign.
