Ogun and Lagos state governments have launched a joint investigation into a fatal road traffic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway involving British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua, amid fresh scrutiny of safety conditions on one of Nigeria's busiest highways.
In a statement released on Monday, both governments confirmed that the vehicle carrying Joshua and three other people collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the death of two people. Officials said inquiries have begun to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the presence and position of the truck on the expressway.
Joshua and another passenger were taken to a specialist medical facility in Lagos, where doctors conducted a comprehensive assessment. The condition of both is stable and do not require emergency medical intervention, officials said, adding that a full medical team has been deployed to monitor their condition.
The statement said Joshua was conscious and in contact with his family.

Beyond the condition of those involved, the government response has focused renewed attention on the long-standing dangers associated with the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a vital transportation corridor that has repeatedly been the site of fatal accidents, often involving broken-down heavy vehicles, poor visibility and traffic management lapses.
Officials said they were coordinating medical aid for survivors and involving relevant agencies as the investigation proceeded.
The government expressed condolences to the families of the two people killed in the crash and also appealed to the public to respect the privacy of Joshua and his family.
He said the results of the investigation would guide further action.
