President Bola Tinubu today spoke on phone with Nigerian-British former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua following the tragic accident in Ogun State in which Joshua was injured and lost two of his colleagues.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said in a statement that the President also spoke to Anthony Joshua's mother immediately after the incident.
“I spoke to AJ over the phone to personally express my condolences on the death of his two colleagues.
“I wished him good health and prayed for him. He assured me that he was getting the best care in the hospital.”
“I also talked to AJ's mother and prayed for her. She was very appreciative of my call.”
“Additionally, I spoke to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was with him at the hospital. The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure that AJ receives the best possible attention.”
Earlier, in a statement on X, President Tinubu – who is currently abroad – expressed deep sympathy to the boxer over the accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“I sympathize with you and your family as you bear the emotional burden of this unfortunate incident. As a player, you have always shown courage, discipline and unwavering love for our country. These are the qualities that have made you a source of national pride.
“In such moments, we must encourage each other as brothers and sisters with a common destiny.
“I pray for strength, wisdom and grace for you during this painful period. May God give you a speedy recovery and may the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
