Two-time heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from a hospital in Nigeria, days after a fatal road accident that took the lives of two of his close friends and team members.
The Lagos and Ogun state governments said in a joint statement on Wednesday that Anthony Joshua had been declared medically fit to recover at home, adding that the former world champion remains “heavy hearted” over the tragic loss.
The 36-year-old Nigerian-born British heavyweight was traveling in a Lexus SUV which collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State on Monday.

Official confirmation of discharge
A statement jointly signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, confirmed that Joshua was discharged from the Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the boxer is “with a heavy heart and full of emotions” after his friends' deaths.
Condolences from the Lagos and Ogun Governments
“The Governments of Lagos and Ogun States once again express their condolences to the families of the two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Sina Ghaemi, who tragically lost their lives in a road accident involving Anthony Joshua on December 29, 2025,” the statement said.
“We pray that the Almighty may rest his soul in peace and give his families and loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss.”
“Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State deeply appreciate the public concern and outpouring of love and affection over this extremely sad and unfortunate incident,” the statement said.
Both state governments also commended President Bola Tinubu for their support throughout the process as well as the medical team at the Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi who cared for Joshua and others injured in the accident.
The statement said that after being discharged, Anthony Joshua headed to the funeral home to pay respect to his departed friends.
