Property worth millions destroyed in fire at Ikotun market in Lagos

Property worth millions of Naira has been destroyed in Ikotun… as many shops and goods were destroyed in the early hours of January 1, 2026.

Videos circulated on social media showed intense flames and thick smoke rising from parts of the market, while residents and traders watched helplessly. Eyewitnesses at the scene said the fire broke out around 12:05 a.m. and quickly spread through the packed stalls.

Ikotun Market is one of the major commercial centers serving residents of Alimosho and surrounding areas. Recurring market fires in Lagos continue to raise concerns about fire safety standards, emergency response capacity and the vulnerability of traders' livelihoods.
