AFCON: Victor Osimhen downplays comparisons

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has downplayed comparisons with the late Rashidi Yekini, insisting that his priority is to help Nigeria win matches rather than chasing personal records.

Nigeria captain Osimhen, who scored in Tuesday's 3-1 win over Uganda, dismissed suggestions he is focused on surpassing Yekini's record of 37 goals.

“To be honest, I never go to bed thinking about trying to equal or surpass the record,” the Galatasaray forward said.

Osimhen explained that his focus remains on contributing to the team through goals, assists and overall effort rather than individual achievements.

According to him, any individual record will come naturally, but not at the expense of team objectives or the enjoyment of the game.

Osimhen currently has 32 goals for Nigeria, five fewer than Yekini's long-standing record, and has scored once in three matches in the current tournament.

Despite failing to get on the scoresheet against Uganda, Osimhen led by example with a goal from Paul Onuachu and two goals from Raphael Onyedika.

Nigeria topped Group C with an excellent record of nine points from three matches and advanced to the round of 16 with confidence.

Osimhen stressed that leadership, teamwork and winning trophies matter more than individual glory at this stage of his career, adding that his focus is on guiding the Super Eagles to a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco.
