Scores of residents, party loyalists and grassroots workers from different political platforms formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at a well-attended meeting in Ibarapa Zone of Oyo State.
Following the mass defection, which carved out three local government areas in the Ibarapa axis, the ADC recorded a major political breakthrough, a development widely seen as a reflection of the changing political sentiments in the state.
The town hall meeting, held in Ibarapa, attracted the attention of political observers and stakeholders, with what party leaders described as growing confidence in the ideology, leadership and grassroots appeal of the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development underlines the growing influence of the party in Oyo State amid growing public dissatisfaction with the two major political parties.
In his remarks, the party's governorship aspirant, Niyi Aborisade, described the mass defection as a significant moment in the political history of the Ibarapa axis.
Aborisade said the defectors' decision to join the ADC reflected growing frustration with recycled leadership and unfulfilled political promises.
According to him, the ADC is steadily emerging as a political vehicle capable of providing credible leadership and restoring public confidence in governance. Aborisade said, “The time of liberation is now, and the day of happiness is near.” He said that the party's message is resonating across the country.
Chairman of the ADC in Oyo State, Yinka Olona, while welcoming the new members, expressed satisfaction over the growing momentum of the party across the state.
Olona assured the defectors of full integration into the party structure, stressing that the ADC works on the principles of inclusivity and internal democracy.
“The party offers a credible alternative for political change in the state and is strategically prepared to play a decisive role in future electoral contests. He urged the new members to remain committed to the ideals of the party and actively participate in strengthening its grassroots structures.
Olona said, “The ADC is the right platform for the people of Oyo State and Nigeria at large. What we are seeing today in Ibarapa is a clear expression of the people's desire for a new political direction based on accountability, good governance and people-oriented leadership.”
Speaking at the event, Bimpe Adelowo, a barrister and Oyo State Publicity Secretary of the party, congratulated the defectors and formally received them into ADC using the party's symbolic handshake, which he said represented unity, loyalty and shared responsibility. He called on the new members to stand firm and support the ongoing mobilization efforts across the state.
The town hall meeting recorded strong participation from party supporters and community stakeholders, with all three local government areas of Ibarapa well represented.
Also present was Segun Erinle from Ibadan North-East, who commended the ADC leadership for its grassroots-driven approach to politics.
Political pundits say Ibarapa's defection is part of a broader mobilization strategy aimed at strengthening the ADC's presence in Oyo State as political activities gather pace ahead of future elections.
