The upcoming election for President of the Broadcasters Organization of Nigeria (BON) has sparked controversy as M4S Communications Limited has formally asked IBAN Chairman Tijani Ramlan to step down, citing possible conflict of interest.
The demand comes after reports that Ramlan acted as a guarantor for a candidate, raising questions over fairness in the electoral process.
In a letter addressed to Alhaji Ramalan and signed by Tony Uyah, the Managing Director and COO of M4S Communications, the company urged the IBAN Chairman to recuse himself from all matters relating to the BON elections.
“This already indicates some vested interests in the election outcome. As members of the region's fourth estate, who are expected to hold political office holders accountable in electoral matters, we have a duty to show a good example when we ourselves become involved in such issues,” the letter said.
The election, which will determine the BON President for the next two years, is reserved for financial members of the BON from the private sector.
Two candidates have officially declared their interest: Senior High Chief Tony Akiyotu, Chairman/CEO of M4S Communications Limited, and Chief Raymond Paul Dokpesi Jr., Chairman of DAAR Communications Plc.
As per the letter, both the candidates fulfill all the eligibility requirements including latest annual dues.
The letter from M4S Communications also emphasizes the importance of a transparent and fair election process.
It urged that IBAN should allow candidates to present their plans to BON members at the next annual general meeting and leave the decision to the members.
“May the best candidate win,” the letter concluded.
The correspondence was copied to the Chairman of the IBAN Board of Trustees, other board members, and all IBAN members, indicating a push for accountability and neutrality within the association.
