Labor Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to unite with him ahead of the 2027 elections in what he described as “Operation Rescue Nigeria”.
Speaking at the Obedient Conference and Manifesto of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Uyo, Obi said the mission is about securing the future of the country and not about personal ambition.
He said, “Operation Rescue Nigeria is not about me; it is about our collective future and the generations who suffer the consequences of bad governance.”
He called on Nigerians to put aside differences and work together to rebuild the country through democratic means.
OB insists on electronic transmission of results
Obi stressed that Nigeria must ensure credible elections in 2027, especially through real-time electronic transmission of results.
“Nigeria must fix this in 2027. Election results must be broadcast online in real time,” he said.
He said that transparency in the electoral process is necessary to restore faith in democracy.
Why did he leave the Labor Party?
Obi said he left the Labor Party after receiving information that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would not recognize the leadership of the party while he remained a member.
“I left the Labor Party when I was told that INEC would not recognize its leadership as long as I remained,” he said.
He confirmed his intention to contest the next presidential election, saying he was committed to the leadership offer.
Obi criticizes rising debt, promises reforms
Obi criticized the current administration over rising public debt and warned that future generations will have to bear the burden.
“The current administration has amassed more debt than every other administration combined, and most of this debt will be repaid between 2045 and 2050,” he said.
If elected, he promised to prioritize investment in education and health care, reduce poverty, and address insecurity.
Supporters gathered under ADC platform
Tanko Yunusa, global coordinator of the OBIDIENT movement, urged supporters to mobilize across the country and strengthen grassroots structures before 2027.
He said the movement would align with the ADC as its political platform and intensify voter mobilization.
“This election is not about any individual but about the future of Nigeria,” Yunusa said.
Obi's supporters said they had begun early mobilization to build momentum for the next presidential election.
