APC targets former Kano governor Shekarau, plans high-level visit to him

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to pay a high-level visit to former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau in a fresh political move aimed at strengthening the party’s influence in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Party sources at the APC National Secretariat told BusinessDay that the visit to Kano next Tuesday will be led by the party's National Chairman, Nentawe Yilawatada. It was told that preparations for the meeting were completed on Thursday.

The outreach is part of the ruling party's broader strategy to persuade Shekarau, a prominent figure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to join the APC and help strengthen its political base in Kano and the wider North-West region.

Shekarau, who previously served as the Governor of Kano State and later represented Kano Central in the Senate, is one of the most influential political figures in the state with a strong hold on the grassroots.

During the 2023 general elections, he played a key role in the PDP campaign, serving as the Kano State Coordinator for the party's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Sources familiar with the development said initial contacts have already been established with the former governor to pave the way for discussion on a possible return to the APC.

Political analysts believe that bringing Shekarau into the APC could significantly change the political landscape of Kano and strengthen the party's position as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually begin.
