AFCON: Burkina Faso advance after finishing second in Group E

Burkina Faso secured second place in Group E at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco with a 2-0 win over Sudan in Casablanca on Wednesday.

Goals from Lassina Traore and Arsene Kouassi sealed a controlled performance, and their opponents missed a penalty.

The win saw the Stallions finish the group stage with six points, three behind group winners Algeria. Despite the loss, Sudan also advanced to the round of 16, having already done so much from their previous results.

Burkina Faso set the tone early and were rewarded for their positive approach. In the 16th minute, Traore rose from a corner to power past the Sudanese goalkeeper to give his side a deserved lead.

Sudan were given a golden opportunity to respond when Hervé Coffey was awarded a penalty after being adjudged to have committed a foul inside the area. However, Al Gozoli Noah pulled his effort wide wide, a miss that clearly took the wind out of Jadeja's Falcons.

Burkinabé completed the group with six points from three matches, while Algeria advanced with a perfect record. Sudan also advanced to the knockout stage as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Burkina Faso will now have to wait for the conclusion of Group F on Wednesday to find out their round of 16 opponents, who could be defending champions Ivory Coast, Cameroon or Mozambique.
