Augsburg earned a resounding 2-1 win over Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday, handing the Bavarians their first league defeat since March 2025.
Defending champions Bayern were headed for another routine win when Hiroki Ito gave them an early lead, but Augsburg staged a spirited comeback with two goals in six minutes of the second half from Arthur Chaves and Han-Noah Masengo.
Bayern, who have been dominant all season, have recorded the best opening half of a Bundesliga campaign in history, dropping just four points from a possible 54 in 18 matches. They looked to be firmly in control when Eto'o headed in a Michael Olise corner in the 23rd minute.
However, Augsburg, who had not won a league match since early December, refused to fold. With 14 minutes remaining, Chaves took advantage of a costly mistake by Bayern's backup goalkeeper Jonas Urbig to even the score.
Moments later, Masengo patiently finished off the team's flowing move to put Augsburg ahead, sending them to their first win in Munich since 2015.
Bayern pushed hard for a late equaliser, with Olise hitting the post in stoppage time, but Augsburg held firm to pull off a memorable upset.
The result opens the door for second-placed Borussia Dortmund to reduce Bayern's lead to eight points with a win at Union Berlin on Saturday.
