Carabao Cup: Cherky stunner sends Man City into semi-finals

Ryan Cherky's brilliant opener helped Manchester City reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2021 with a 2-0 win over Brentford.

Cherky's brilliant strike and Savinho's second-half effort ensured Pep Guardiola's side booked a place in the last four, moving one step closer to another trip to Wembley.

The win marked an important milestone for City, who had not reached this stage of the competition since securing their fourth consecutive win in 2021.

Brentford started brightly and enjoyed the early momentum, but failed to make it count before being forced to rely on stand-in goalkeeper Haakon Valdimarsson, who kept away Cherky's rising effort to keep the scores level.

In the second half, Nico O'Reilly fired a long-range effort straight at Valdimarsson, while Brentford threatened at the other end through Christopher Ajer, whose powerful drive was brilliantly turned away by James Trafford.

City booked their place in the semi-finals on 67 minutes when Savinho's deflected strike went over Valdimerson and into the net, leaving Guardiola's side one of the last four teams remaining in the competition.
