Edo government gives former deputy governor ultimatum to return state property

The Edo government has issued a one-week ultimatum to former Deputy Governor Godwin Omobayo to immediately return all government property and assets in his possession.

This was contained in a statement by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo in Benin on Tuesday.

The state government said many official items, including vehicles, documents and other state-owned properties handed over to Omobayo during his tenure, are yet to be handed over to the appropriate authorities, despite formal reminders.

It reiterated that all properties acquired or used during public service remain the property of the State and must be duly returned on termination of office.

“The continued retention of such assets by any person is a clear breach of public trust and illegal usurpation of state assets.

“Accordingly, Omobayo has been given a period of seven days from the date of this release to fully comply by returning all government property under his custody to the office of the Secretary to the State Government.

It said, “Failure to comply within the stipulated period will compel the State Government to direct the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command to arrest him and ensure immediate recovery of all state properties still in his possession through legal means.”

The government said the Addo government is committed to accountability, due process and the protection of public property.

It states that no person, regardless of former office or political affiliation, shall be allowed to unlawfully acquire or retain the property of the people of Edo State.

“This administration, under the leadership of Governor Mande Okpebholo, will continue to uphold the principles of transparency, discipline and integrity in the public service, ensuring that all public officials are held to the highest standards of accountability and integrity,” he said.

The government urged Omobayo to respect this directive and avoid actions that could lead to consequences or further embarrassment.
