…as ministry strengthens cooperation on veterinary services, rabies eradication by 2030

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Livestock Development, has donated 700 doses of anti-rabies vaccine to the Veterinary Clinic of the University of Abuja.

The donation is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen veterinary health care and support the global campaign to eliminate rabies by 2030, a ministry statement said.

Announcing the donation in Abuja on Friday, Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria (CVOIN), Samuel Anjaku, said the move underlines the ministry's commitment to advance research, innovation and disease prevention in Nigeria's livestock sector.

Anjaku, who led the ministry's delegation to the institute, said the donated items included 700 doses of anti-rabies vaccine, syringes, cotton packs, disinfectants and other disease-control consumables.

He stressed the importance of accurate documentation and reporting of vaccination activities within and around the university community.

He said, “The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development recognizes the important role of the University of Abuja in advancing veterinary education and field research. This collaboration will help improve vaccination coverage and enhance disease surveillance capacity.”

Responding, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Matthew Adamu, appreciated the support of the Ministry and assured that the vaccines and materials will be used judiciously.

“With Anjaku’s leadership as Chief Veterinary Officer and the Federal Government’s renewed focus on livestock health, we expect to see a significant transformation in veterinary services, particularly in disease surveillance and outreach to remote livestock communities,” Adamu said.

He further urged Nigerian tertiary institutions to establish prototype farms for teaching, research and revenue generation, adding that such initiatives would strengthen collaboration between academia and government in livestock development.

The visit reaffirmed the Federal Government's resolve to promote inter-institutional partnerships and maintain preventive health programs in line with the One Health approach to animal and human welfare.
