Governor Sanwo-Olu unveils Lagos Sports Trust Fund to boost grassroots development

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has charted a new course for sports funding by inaugurating the Lagos State Sports Trust Fund (LSSTF) Board of Trustees.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, the governor urged the newly appointed members to mobilize private sector resources to revive sports development across the state.

Sanwo-Olu challenged the Board to use its networks, expertise and professional influence to create sustainable institutions that will support sports development for current and future generations.

He said, “The mandate is straightforward. Use your contacts, skills and professional background to help fund sports and establish strong institutions in Lagos State.”

Focus on grassroots level and infrastructure

The Governor stressed the need to prioritize grassroots programs and rehabilitation of sports facilities, noting that many government funded projects need completion and upgrading.

“I urge you to deploy resources into grassroots and school sports that encourage growth in our divisions,” he said.

He explained that the Trust Fund is designed to bridge the gap between government and private sector participation in sports development.

“Many organizations are willing to extend support but are reluctant to approach the government directly.

“This quasi-body can reach out to the private sector while taking advantage of government experience,” he said.

The Chairman of the Board is Enitan Oshodi, while Olaposi Agunbiade serves as the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer. Other members include Olabode Agoro, Adeniyi Adekoya, Gbolahan Onibuje, Jubril Gawat, Kikelomo Bolarinwa, Olayemi Sarumi, Lekan Fatodu, Moshood Ajide and Ibrahim Adigun.

Speaking at the Lagos House, Oshodi said the board would focus on creating sustainable funding pathways for infrastructure development and athlete support.

“The Lagos State government is spending heavily on sports, but it is never enough in a megacity with a population of over 20 million people,” he said.

“We need facilities to support the athletes. While the government is trying, the private sector should play a major role.”

Oshodi said successful sporting nations rely heavily on private investment and expressed confidence that the board would attract strong corporate support.

He said, “Our main goal is to support the private sector. With the capacity of this board, we expect quick wins and long-term sustainable sports development in Lagos.”
