Guimaraes' late goal gives Newcastle victory against Fulham

Bruno Guimaraes scored a dramatic 90th-minute winning goal as Newcastle United held on for a hard-fought 2-1 win over Fulham at St James' Park on Saturday.

Eddie Howe's side looked set for another disappointing afternoon after Sasa Lukic canceled out Jacob Murphy's first-half opener, but Guimarães secured a vital three points for the Magpies with a late strike.

Newcastle took the lead midway through the first half when Murphy found space on the right and fired past Bernd Leno. However, Fulham refused to back down and equalized through Lukic, who reacted quickest to the rebound after Raul Jimenez's powerful volley hit the crossbar.

Just as the game looked headed for an equaliser, substitute William Osula tested Leno with a powerful strike, and the Fulham goalkeeper's parry dropped Guimaraes wide to score from close range, sparking wild celebrations inside St James' Park.

The win follows Newcastle's midweek Champions League win over Benfica and lifts Howe's men up the Premier League table as they continue to build momentum.

Meanwhile, Fulham's troubles deepened as Marco Silva's side suffered a fourth consecutive defeat.

“I feel incredible. We were very tired from Wednesday's game, but we fought to the end. My family were here, and to score in front of the Gallowgate End was very special. This is the Newcastle I know, we fight to the end,” Guimaraes said during the post-match briefing.
