Fubara impeachment stopped
Impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor Siminalai Fubara and his deputy Ngozi Odoo have stalled after state Chief Justice Chibuzor Amadi rejected the Assembly's request to set up a seven-man investigative panel. Amadi said he was prevented by existing court orders preventing him from taking such action.
In a letter dated January 20, 2026, to the Assembly Speaker, the Chief Justice confirmed receipt of the MPs' requests and the attached documents, but said the interim injunction issued by the Rivers State High Court prevented him from acting.
“My office has also received two separate court orders of interim injunction issued on January 16, 2026,” he wrote, referring to the suits filed separately by Fubara and Odu, in which they were listed as defendants. He said the orders barred him from “receiving, forwarding, considering, and/or acting on” any impeachment-related requests.
President supports Fubara
The Presidency on Friday confirmed that Fubara remains the leader of the All-Progressive Congress (APC) in Rivers State, rejecting claims that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike wields influence over the party in the state amid the ongoing impeachment proceedings against the governor.
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, said on Channels Television that Wike was not a member of the APC and, therefore, could not speak for the party, stressing that Fubara should be allowed to govern without interference. He said Wike has been “adequately compensated” by the President, but not at the expense of the national interest.
Bwala also said the impeachment process must follow due process and respect existing court orders, stressing that no individual or group should hinder Fubara's administration in Rivers State.
Court dismissed Abure from the post of LP president
The Federal High Court in Abuja has removed Julius Abure as National Chairman of the Labor Party (LP), relying on the Supreme Court judgment which validated the acting leadership of the party.
In a ruling delivered on Wednesday, presiding judge Peter Lifu declared former finance minister Nnadi Osman the legitimate leader of the party until the holding of a national conference.
The court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Usman-led caretaker committee as “the sole legitimate authority to represent the Labor Party”, recognizing that Abure's term had expired. The judge rejected Abure's claim that the dispute was an internal party matter beyond judicial review, also ruling that the caretaker committee was “a necessity” as per the Supreme Court directive.
Tinubu appointed ambassador to UK, US
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday approved the appointment of Ayodele Oke as Nigeria's Ambassador-designate to France and retired Colonel Lateef Are as Ambassador-designate to the United States of America. They also approved the appointment of Aminu Dalhatu, former South Korean ambassador, as High Commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom. The President had earlier nominated former Kebbi State Governor Osman Isa Dakingari Suleiman as ambassador-designate to Turkey ahead of a planned state visit to the country next week. However, in an update issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bio Onanuga, effectively revising the earlier announcement, Dekingari was removed from the position of Nigeria's Ambassador-designate to Turkey.
North-Central APC Forum warns against replacing Shettima as Tinubu's current running mate
The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has rejected calls for the removal of Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing such move as a serious political miscalculation. The forum's position was outlined in a statement issued in Abuja by its Chairman, Saleh Zazaga, amid reports that some members of the party were pushing for Shettima's replacement.
Speculations intensified after Shettima's photo was removed from the banner displayed at the APC's North-East regional public hearing on constitutional amendments in Maiduguri. The banner featured Tinubu, five APC governors from the region and the party's National Legal Adviser, sparking debate over Shettima's status and the future of the APC's Muslim-Muslim ticket.
2027: Jandor launches campaign website
Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Zandor, has indicated his intention to contest the 2027 Lagos State governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The move was hinted at by a campaign flyer he shared on Wednesday, which read, “Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran for Jandor Governor, Lagos State 2027.”
In a Facebook post, Jandor also announced the launch of his campaign website, describing it as part of his preparations for the APC governorship primaries. He said the platform will allow Lagos residents to engage with their views and contribute to shaping his policy agenda, adding that his focus is on the party leadership and the people of the state.
Obi's ADC candidacy depends on Atiku's return – ex-government candidate
Former Adamawa gubernatorial candidate, Umar Ardo, has said that Peter Obi may find it difficult to secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for the 2027 election unless former Vice President Atiku Abubakar steps aside. Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, Ardo said Atiku is in a strong position to win the party's nomination.
“Well, the ADC, as currently constituted, if it goes for primaries a hundred times, Atiku will win a hundred times,” he said, adding that Obi can only emerge as the party’s candidate “if Atiku steps down.”
