INEC refuses to release timetable for 2027 general elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted reports claiming that it has released the timetable and program of activities for the 2027 general elections.

This was disclosed on Friday in a statement signed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman.

The commission described the reports as false and misleading, emphasizing that no timetable or program has been released for the 2027 elections.

INEC said it operated strictly within the ambit of the law, citing Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which requires the commission to publish a notice of election 360 days before the date fixed for a general election.

According to the Commission, any timetable issued outside this legal window could not have emanated from INEC.

The Commission assured Nigerians that the official timetable and program of activities for the 2027 general elections will be released in due course.

It said this would be done in full compliance with the Constitution of 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022.

INEC said that when the timetable is ready, it will be communicated through its official and verified channels.

The Commission urged the public and media not to pay attention to fake reports and only rely on information from INEC's official platforms.
