Kano approves ₦6.9 billion projects, reviews PPP framework to boost private sector development


Kano State Government has intensified its push for private sector-driven development with the approval of a ₦6.9 billion spending package on infrastructure, social services and youth empowerment as well as a reviewed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) policy and manual.

The decisions were taken at the 36th Kano State Executive Council meeting held on December 31, 2025, indicating the government’s intention to deepen collaboration between public institutions and private investors to accelerate socio-economic development across the state.

Briefing journalists after the meeting on Thursday night, the state government's Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs Ibrahim Vaiya said the updated PPP framework is designed to attract private capital, increase efficiency in project delivery and reduce pressure on public finances, especially infrastructure, education, water supply and urban development.

Beyond the policy changes, the Council approved a total of over ₦6,9 billion for major projects across a number of sectors. In Land Administration, ₦859.2 million was approved as compensation for owners of properties affected by the construction of a five-kilometre dualised road in Tudun Wada Local Government Area, aimed at ensuring fairness and smooth project execution.

As part of environmental and flood control efforts, ₦358.4 million was approved for storm water drainage and culvert construction at Tudun Wuzirsi in Kano Municipal Local Government Area.
The largest share of expenditure was on infrastructure development, with the Works Ministry getting approval for several strategic road and drainage projects.

These include ₦896.1 million for the reconstruction of a failed multi-cell box culvert along Kiru-Alhajawa-Belon Koki Road, ₦2.62 billion for the construction of Yandodo-Mai-Alo Road in Nasarawa Local Government Area, and ₦1.21 billion for reinforced concrete box culvert and hydraulic structures along Karari-Kwaimawa-Santar Komau-Badau-Dutsen. Karya-Gima Road.

In support of human capital development, the Council approved ₦431.7 million for graduation ceremonies and empowerment kits for beneficiaries of selected entrepreneurship institutions across the state, strengthening the administration’s focus on youth skills and employment creation.

The water resources sector also received a boost, with ₦85.6 million approved for the expansion of water pipelines in parts of Greater Kano, especially Gwale Local Government Area. In the education sector, Sh285.2 million was approved as the revised cost for the construction of four classroom storey blocks with offices in the 44 local government areas of the state.

To strengthen governance and accountability, the Council approved ₦157.7 million for an anti-corruption workshop for state directors, which will be coordinated by the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

On the legislative front, the Executive Council approved the transfer to the Kano State Assembly of four major bills including Local Government Administration, Economic Planning and Development, Education Reform and renaming of Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Dambatta.

The meeting also saw the presentation of awards to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Kano State Government in recognition of achievements in digital transformation, leadership, housing, healthcare delivery, community development and support of vulnerable groups. The development partners additionally donated a skills acquisition training package and a 32-seater coaster bus.

The government said the combination of expanded PPP reforms and targeted public expenditure underlines its commitment to inclusive growth, transparency and improved service delivery, with the private sector expected to play a central role in Kano's development agenda.
