A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Foluke Stella Osafile, has defected from the Labor Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Osafile, who represents Amuwo-Odofin Constituency I, is a first-time lawmaker and currently serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Wealth Creation. He is the only opposition MLA in the 40-member assembly.
The MLA is expected to formally announce her defection to ADC during the plenary session in the coming days.
Confirming the development to BusinessDay, Osafile said, “Yes, it is true. I have left the ADC.”
However, he refused to reveal the reason for his defection. When asked when she would officially inform her colleagues in the House, she said, “Don't worry, I will announce it during the plenary session soon.”
Osafile was elected to the assembly in 2023 on the platform of the Labor Party by defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Foloranso Olaton Segun, by a wide margin.
His victory was later challenged by the APC at the Election Petitions Tribunal, which initially ruled in favor of the APC candidate. However, Osafile approached the Court of Appeal and successfully regained his seat, ending the legal battle.
