Masbate gets Starlink units

Following the impact of recent typhoons, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has launched 100 Starlink units in Masbate province to restore internet connections.

In a statement over the weekend, the DICT said 100 priority locations had been identified across the province for the strategic installation of Starlink units.

It said these sites include government offices, barangay halls, health care facilities and critical response units for disaster coordination, emergency communications and public service delivery.

Units donated by satellite-based internet provider SpaceX. Installation began on October 15, the DICT said.

As of October 24, the DICT noted that 48 Starlink units have been installed and activated.

“These terminals will provide high-speed, low-latency Internet to enable real-time communication and coordination during emergencies,” the department said.

This rollout is part of DICT's effort to empower geographically isolated and deprived areas (GIDAs) through stronger connectivity.

“Through this collaboration between DICT, SpaceX and local government partners, Masbate moves closer to achieving resilient, inclusive and digitally connected communities,” the department said.

Masbate Governor Richard Kho said about 44,536 families were affected by Typhoon Oppong (International name: Bualoi) last month.
