The Federal Government has issued a stern advisory to Nigerians living in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighboring Gulf countries following the escalating military actions by Israel, the United States and Iran in the Middle East.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Kimibi Abianfa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson in Abuja, the government said it is closely monitoring the volatile situation arising out of reported military attacks by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, as well as retaliation by Iran against some Gulf countries.
The ministry warned that the heightened tensions in the region pose significant security risks and may escalate further, making it necessary for Nigerian citizens in the affected areas to take immediate precautionary measures.
Under the advisory, Nigerians in Iran and neighboring Gulf states were urged to maintain constant vigilance and be highly conscious of their surroundings.
Civilians were particularly advised to avoid strategic locations, including military and government installations, that could become flashpoints in ongoing hostilities.
The government also strongly recommended that Nigerians limit non-essential travel and activities until the security situation stabilizes.
They were cautioned against participating in large gatherings or public demonstrations, which could expose them to unexpected dangers amid the emerging crisis.
Furthermore, the Ministry directed all affected citizens to strictly follow the safety and security instructions issued by local authorities, stressing that cooperation with law enforcement agencies in host countries is vital for personal safety during periods of instability.
To avoid panic and misinformation, Nigerians were encouraged to rely on reliable international and local news sources for updates, while avoiding unverified reports circulating on social media and unofficial platforms.
The Federal Government further assured citizens that Nigerian diplomatic missions in the area are on high alert.
'The Embassy of Nigeria in Tehran and the embassies of Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have been placed on alert to provide consular assistance and facilitate communication with Nigerians who may require assistance,' the statement said.
The Ministry confirmed that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains the top priority of the Federal Government, noting that the situation is being constantly assessed and further updates will be communicated as required.
Nigeria called on all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and return to dialogue.
The Government urged for reduction of hostilities in the interest of global peace, regional stability and peaceful co-existence.
