One dead hours after Tinubu's Plateau peace march

Barely 24 hours after Bola Tinubu visited Jos to reassure residents over the recent violence, another attack has occurred, raising fresh security concerns.

Suspected militants attacked Jol community in Riom local government area in the early hours of Friday, killing one person. The attack reportedly originated from the Rankum (Mahanga) area and local leaders have described it as a direct blow to the ongoing peace efforts.

Berom Youth Molders Association (BYM) spokesperson Rawang Tengwong confirmed the killing in a telephone conversation with BusinessDay in Jos on Friday.
He said, “Yes, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, after Jol’s visit this morning (Friday) a community in Riom Local Government Area was attacked and one person killed.”

Efforts to reach Police Public Relations Officer Alfred Alabo for comment on the attack were unsuccessful as calls to his numbers were not going through, making a direct response from authorities unavailable at the time.

The latest attack in Riom comes amid tensions over recent violence in Jos North, where coordinated attacks left more than 28 people dead, properties destroyed and communities terrorized.

In response, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal government intensified efforts to restore peace, including the deployment of additional security personnel and plans to install CCTV surveillance to strengthen surveillance and rapid response.

Despite the President's assurance during his visit that such violence would not recur, the renewed attacks in Riom highlight the fragile security situation in Plateau State and the urgent need for continued intervention.
