Oyo implements zero tolerance towards illegal parking, warns of sanctions

The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has announced full implementation of zero-tolerance policy against illegal parking across the state during and after the Crossover Night celebrations.

“We expect an increase in vehicular movement and large gatherings. To prevent traffic jams, chaos and most importantly loss of lives, immediate and strict bans on all forms of illegal parking will be imposed. This enforcement is not just for convenience; it is a vital security measure”, retired Major and Acting Chairman of OYRTMA, Adekoya Adesagba, said in Ibadan.

This directive will be strictly enforced during the high-traffic period of December 31 and will remain in force even after the festivities as part of the authority's continued commitment to road safety and free traffic flow, he said.

“Our focus on Crossover Night remains unwavering, it is the responsibility of every motorist to ensure that such vehicles are immediately and safely removed from the road,” Adesagba said.

The Chairman stressed that while crossover nights will increase the risks associated with illegal parking, this crime remains a daily threat to public safety.

He said, “Parking on highways, sidewalks and turns, or abandoning vehicles on the road is dangerous and unacceptable at any time. These actions put lives at risk every day, and OYRTMA's enforcement duty is relentless.”

OYRTMA specifically prohibits the following offenses, during and at all times during Crossover Night: “Parking on highways, walkways and curbs, parking clear vehicles and trucks on roadway sides and medians, abandoning defective or broken-down vehicles on highways or public roads.

“The breakdown of the vehicle is not an excuse for disrupting traffic,” Major Adesagba said.

To support motorists during the festivities and in emergency situations, OYRTMA's response lines will remain active. Members of the public can report accidents, breakdowns or dangerously parked vehicles through the following numbers:

OYRTMA Emergency Contact:
0912 888 8878 | 0704 700 0594.

The Acting Chairman assured residents that OYRTMA patrol teams will remain on high alert throughout the crossover night and continue to maintain constant vigil on major roads and internal routes across the state.

“Vehicles violating traffic rules will be seized without notice, while offenders will face fines and possible prosecution.

“Celebrate smartly, park legally and protect each other. May safe and lawful conduct guide us not only this night, but throughout the New Year and beyond,” he said.
