PDP dissolves party structure in five states

…the conference supports nationwide congresses

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in one of the most far-reaching organizational decisions to emerge from its national conference held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday dissolved all its existing structures in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States. The declaration, adopted by delegates at the conference, immediately cancels all ward, local government and state-level party organs in the affected states.

The dissolution motion was moved by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who told delegates that the nationwide congress held between 2024 and 2025 was peaceful and met legal and internal requirements, yet the party resolved to reset its structures in the five states. His motion was seconded by the party's National Auditor and National Working Committee (NWC) member Daniel Okechuwu, indicating broad leadership support for the move.

Makinde said the PDP had held congresses across the country to elect new officials at ward, local government, state and regional levels as well as national ex-officio members. According to him, the processes were conducted in line with the Electoral Act 2022, the PDP Constitution and the internal rules of the party. He said both the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) and NWC reviewed and approved the results of the congress.

Despite this recognition, Makinde said the party has decided that political realities in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers require a complete overhaul of their existing structures. Without giving further details about the reasons, he said the decision was taken in the interest of strengthening internal cohesion and ensuring uniformity as the PDP is reorganizing its political machinery across the country.

“With respect to Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers, the conference dissolves all party structures at ward, local government and state levels,” Makinde told delegates. He said the conference had authorized the publication of the decision so that it would serve as a formal notice to the general public and stakeholders within and outside the party.

The announcement attracted immediate attention among party members, given that the affected states are traditionally PDP strongholds or battlegrounds with complex political dynamics. The dissolution means that caretaker committees or new transitional arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days to manage party affairs until the convening of the new Congress.

Party leaders at the conference described the broader Congress exercise as peaceful and transparent, stressing that the process represents a new commitment to internal democracy. He said the result demonstrated the party's readiness to re-establish itself ahead of upcoming election cycles.

Now after the dissolution, the party is expected to issue a new timetable and guidelines for the reconstitution of its organs in the affected states.

The conference concluded with the leaders urging members to remain united as the party works to rebuild, reconcile factions and strengthen its presence across Nigeria.
