Nicolas Sarkozy has become the first French former president to be jailed as he begins a five-year sentence for conspiring to finance his election campaign with the money of late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Sarkozy has said that he does not want any special treatment in La Sante prison, although he is kept in an isolated section for his own safety, as other prisoners are notorious drug dealers or have been convicted of terrorist crimes.
Inside his cell in the prison's isolation wing, he will have a toilet, shower, desk and small TV. He will be allowed one hour a day for exercise.
Last weekend, he was welcomed at the Elysee Palace by President Emmanuel Macron, who told reporters on Monday, “It was normal that on a humanitarian level I should welcome one of my predecessors in that context”.
In a further measure of official support for the former president, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said he would visit Sarkozy in prison as part of his role in ensuring Sarkozy's security and the proper functioning of the prison.
“I can't be insensitive to a person's plight,” he said.
