PSC Chairman Gregorio pushes for integration of Batang Pinoy and Palarong Pambansa

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The biggest Batang Pinoy edition in history could be a prelude to an even better national youth sports program.

Under the leadership of Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) emphasizes the integration of grassroots development programs with the Department of Education.Deped) for annual youth pageants like Batang Pinoy and Palarong Pambansa.

As of now, Batang Pinoy which is under PSC and Palaro under DepEd are held separately every year with some students showcasing their performance in both the tournaments whose qualifications are almost the same.

Under Mr Gregorio's proposal, Batang Pinoy could be open to eight to 15-year-olds, while Palaro could be open to 16 to 21-year-olds.

The PSC will oversee the implementation of sporting events with the National Sports Associations (NSAs), while DepEd will take over the administration, operations and logistics, given its nationwide network in different regions compared to the PSC's limited centers in Manila and Pasig.

Batang Pinoy is hosting the biggest edition in history this year, with nearly 25,000 delegates including more than 18,000 athletes from 188 local government units (LGUs) winning their hearts out in 27 sports.

Once coordination with DepEd is established, it goes nowhere other than the ultimate goal of establishing a national youth training pool – such as an elite team – comprised of outstanding players from Batang Pinoy and Palarong Pambansa.

“Batang Pinoys will never be the same again. It will only get more beautiful and exciting from here on out with the PSC and DepEd working together for the National Grassroots Sports Development Program and joining forces with the Palarong Pambansa,” he said with a smile. , John Brian Ulande
