The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced a decline in power generation on the National Grid, saying this is due to gas supply disruptions arising from an alleged incident of gas pipeline sabotage within the upstream gas supply network.
The operator said in a statement signed by its management on Tuesday that the incident has affected gas availability at several power generation facilities. It said, many gas-fired power stations recorded reduced generation, resulting in reduced generation capacity available on the national grid.
“The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) wishes to inform the general public and stakeholders in the sector that there has been a decline in power generation on the national grid due to gas supply disruptions arising from the alleged incident of gas pipeline sabotage within the upstream gas supply network.
“The incident affected gas availability at several power generation facilities.
“As a result, many gas-fired power stations recorded lower generation, resulting in reduced generation capacity available on the national grid,” the statement read.
The operator however explained that in response to the development, it has immediately activated contingency measures established to maintain system stability and reliability.
These measures include increased dispatch from available hydro stations, continuous generation re-dispatch, voltage control interventions and other necessary operational actions to balance power supply with system demand.
“Working with relevant stakeholders to mitigate the impact of gas supply disruptions, we are closely monitoring grid conditions, including system frequency and voltage profiles.

“The situation highlights the importance of coordinated efforts to address gas supply disruptions, especially as we approach the festive season, which is traditionally sensitive for grid operations.
“NISO wishes to reassure the public of its commitment to proactive grid management and application of appropriate operating standards to ensure safe, stable and reliable power supply across the country,” it said.
