Residents of Bam community in Chugwi, Wwang District, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State have plunged into mourning after a deadly attack marred New Year celebrations.
The attack reportedly occurred around 11:00 pm on December 31, 2025, when residents were preparing to bid farewell to 2025 and welcome the new year.
A statement made available to journalists via the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) WhatsApp platform in Jos on Thursday morning by the National Publicity Secretary, Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM) of Rawang Tengwong, said armed terrorists or bandits invaded the community in barely minutes in 2026, and unleashed violence on unsuspecting residents.

“While the world welcomed the New Year in celebration, residents of Bam community in Chugwi, Wwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, plunged into mourning following a deadly attack”; The statement said.
“Seven bodies have been recovered, while search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, leading to fears that casualties could rise”; Tengvong added in the statement.
He said the incident occurred despite an earlier security alert warning that several communities in Jos South Local Government Area had been earmarked for possible attacks.
BusinessDay reports that the Bam community has now joined the growing list of rural settlements hit by violent attacks in Plateau State, deepening concerns over the security of lives and property, especially during festivals meant for peace and celebration.
At the time of filing this report, both Samson Jhakome, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) and Alfred Alabo, spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, were yet to comment on the incident, although the statement by the Berom Youths Moulder-Association was shared on the Operation Enduring Peace and Police Command WhatsApp platforms.
