Two killed, 16 injured due to brake failure in Jos tanker accident


Two people have been confirmed dead, while 16 others have sustained various injuries in an auto accident around Polo Roundabout in Jos North Local Government Area of ​​Plateau State.

Peter Longson, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Plateau State Command, confirmed the incident in a statement in Jos on Monday.

Longson said the crash occurred near the Polo Field Club roundabout near St. Louis College, involving a tanker and five other vehicles.

He said the accident was reported to the FRSC at around 6:49 pm, resulting in a swift rescue operation by authorities.

The statement said two (2) male adults died on the spot, while 16 others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH).

Recalling eyewitness accounts, Longson said the tanker lost its brakes after the Plateau State Specialist Hospital roundabout and continued to slide until it eventually collided with the affected vehicles.

As part of measures to prevent breakdown of law and order, he said partner security agencies including the Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, officers of Operation Rainbow, Nigerian Army, Federal Fire Service, Vehicle Inspection Officers and those from the Nigerian Red Cross Society cordoned off the surrounding area and diverted traffic to ensure the safety of road users.

“The petroleum product contents were safely trans-loaded, all vehicles involved have been safely removed and all obstructions have been cleared,” Longson said.
