Wike rejects 2027 presidential bid, reaffirms support for Tinubu until 2031

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has rejected claims that some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are pushing him to contest the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, Senior Special Assistant to Wike on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, described the report as “yet another lie from idle minds who have nothing to contribute to the development of the country.”

Olayinka said the story, published by an online forum, was a failed attempt to drag Wike into unnecessary political controversy.

“The report circulated by a platform known for lies and blackmail, claiming that PDP leaders held a meeting to ‘push’ Wike to contest the elections in 2027, is fabricated by idle minds,” the statement said.

Olayinka insisted that Wike's position is clear: he supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu until 2031.

He said Wike is not someone who works in secrecy.

“He says what he says and does what he says. It's unfortunate that the people behind this campaign can't think beyond cheap tactics. Clearly, they need better minds to guide them.”

Olayinka reiterated that Wike has made his position clear on the 2027 election, saying he stands with President Tinubu.

Responding to reports of the alleged PDP meeting, Olayinka clarified that the only meeting which held on August 20, 2025 involved Southern PDP stakeholders and had nothing to do with supporting Wike for the presidency.

“That meeting was called to discuss a proposed gathering in Lagos on August 21, 2025, where some individuals already planned to formalize the micro-zoning of allocated party positions in the South,” he explained.

He said the outcome of the meeting was publicly released in a statement titled, ‘Re: Purported Meeting of the PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit’, which was signed by a number of PDP leaders from the South-East and South-South, including state party chairmen, MPs and former officials.

Signatories included Austin Nwachukwu (Imo), Abraham Amah (Abia), Barr. Venatius Ikem (Cross River), Rt. Honorable. Annikan Akpan (Akwa Ibom), and Aaron Chukwuemeka (Rivers), as well as Hon. Chidibere Egwu Goodluck (National Vice President, South-East) and Hon. OK Chinda (Minority Leader, House of Representatives).

Also listed were Senator Igwe Nwagu, Mao Ohuabunwa, George Sekibo, Mike Ama Nnachi, former National Secretary Rt. Honorable. Onway S. Onway, Deputy National Legal Advisor Barr. Okechukwu Osuoha, and former Ebonyi State legal adviser Barr. Mudi Erhnade, among others.

Olayinka stressed that the names were taken from widely circulated press statements, published in major newspapers and broadcast on national television, proving that there was no hidden agenda.

“We understand his motive. But the character of the FCT minister is known – he does not operate in secrecy.”

He reaffirmed Wike's commitment to President Tinubu's political and development agenda.

“He has clearly said that he stands with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu until 2031.”

Olayinka said Wike will continue to work on the renewed hope agenda in the FCT, in line with the President’s vision of the capital city meeting global infrastructure standards.
